Last minute Labor Day fun in West, Texas at Westfest

West is known as the kolache capital of Texas.

Still itchin’ to get away for Labor Day weekend?

West, Texas is the place to be. Besides being known as the kolache capital of Texas, West is known for honoring its Czech heritage at a famous Westfest bash. 20,000 some odd visitors make it to Westest every year over Labor Day weekend. Don’t be surprised if you see lots of people in traditional Czech dress.

Polka tunes fill the air all weekend, so much so that there are two music venues twirling tunes till a little after midnight both Saturday and Sunday. Watch professional Polka dancers , learn to Polka yourself, and be sure to take a break for cool drinks, sausages, and kolaches.

Get up early on Saturday to catch the 10:00 A.M. parade, and then sign up for the horseshoe and washer tournaments. Get up even earlier on Sunday to run off all the delicious festival food at the Kolache Fun Run at 8:00 A.M. Afterwards, try out the Sunday morning Polka Mass at 10:15, where traditional hymns are sung to familiar polkas and waltzes.

Organizers have taken time to arrange plenty of fun for the kids too, including a free Lego building station. Daily admission fees for festival events range from $12 to free for the little ones. Parking fees are reasonable as well.

A Czech proverb says: Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today. So make plans right now to be a part of Westfest.

West, Texas is only about 75 miles south of Dallas on I-35, putting it in easy reach for Metroplex revelers looking for a last-minute Labor Day getaway. With so much Czech heritage around, you just may feel you’ve traveled around the world.

Fill up your tank with gas and fill up a bag of kolaches for the road at the Czech Bakery and Gas Station near IH35.
