Chivas de Guadalajara managed to put the ball in the net in the 89th minute after trailing against Monarcas Morelia for 82 minutes in the first game of week 15 action of the Apertura 2013 of La Liga MX. William Guzman made his debut for Chivas with the last minute goal, becoming the third since 2006 to debut with a goal. The 2006 debutant was Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, now with Manchester United in the EPL.
The draw elevates Chivas out of the final spot in the league table. However, Atlas, Pumas UNAM and Atlante FC have yet to play this week. All four have 9 points, Chivas leads on goal differential.
Morelia missed the opportunity to escalate into the third position. The monarchy does move up to the 5th spot with an almost secure spot in the playoffs. Monarcas put the ball in the net in the 7th minute of play with a goal from Edgar Andrade. While Morelia scored first, they slowly gave up control of the field to the Rebaño Sagrado.
Chivas was a timid team in the first half but came to life in the second half after seeing Morelia’s lack of drive. As time moved the goats slowly took over the field. In the 85th minute the referee pulled a red card on Chilean Hector Mancilla leaving Chivas with the numerical superiority.
Guzman entered the game in the 73rd minute making his official debut. With Chivas applying pressure, Guzman received a center from Marco Fabian in the 89th minute. He jumped and tapped the ball into an open net when Federico Vilar was on the opposite end of the goal. Chivas applied more pressure during compensation time but were not able to take the game.
Morelia had a Copa MX game midweek and that could explain the team’s lack of game. As for Chivas, they have yet to win a game under Coach Juan Carlos Ortega. He reaches a five draw and four loss record since taking over the team. Their next challenge is Club Santos Laguna at the Omnilife stadium.
Friday’s other game:
