Although many Baltimore private schools start the Christmas break today, some go into next week. For parents still looking for the perfect “teacher gift,” Ben Shiffrin, Head of the Jemicy School offers some advice. Remember, while it is not necessary to give your child’s teacher a gift, it is a nice gesture that they are sure to appreciate. Instead of the usual coffee mugs, scented candles, and lotions, consider these unique gifts (in all price ranges):
· Gift Cards: Gift cards are always well received, as they allow the recipient to purchase something they truly like. Consider purchasing gift cards to a restaurant, a store, the movies, a coffee shop, or a pre-paid gift card that a teacher can use anywhere. At Jemicy, the parents chip in to purchase a gift card for each teacher, thereby preventing a teacher from receiving multiples of the same gift.
· Flowers: Sending flowers to school or having your child bring in a festive arrangement is a great way to let your child’s teachers know you appreciate them; they brighten up the classroom and/or the teacher’s home.
· Books: A book can be one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give. Choose one of your favorites, a humorous book, or one you think your child’s teacher might enjoy. If you have trouble deciding on a book, consider a gift card to a bookstore in your area.
· Board Games for Classroom: Board games are used in the classroom to reinforce what children are learning in an entertaining way. With budget cuts, these “extras” are a welcome addition to the classroom.
· School Supplies (such as hand sanitizer, tissues, paper, markers, crayons, etc.): Many teachers end up purchasing everyday school supplies with their own money. Teachers are sure to appreciate more of the basic items they use every day.
· Spa Gift Certificate:Teachers have a stressful job, so a gift certificate to a spa for a massage or manicure gives teachers the gift of relaxation, which is something they are certain to love.
·Thoughtful Note: A thoughtful note, letting your child’s teachers know how much you appreciate them, is a nice way to remind them of the important job they are doing each day. A note is a cost-free, yet priceless way to let the teachers know they are making a positive impact.
