'Last Comic Standing' recap: a married couple and Chris Rock's little brother

"Last Comic Standing" had a pretty stellar first episode of auditions in New York, so of course the pressure was on to repeat that level of success. Unfortunately, it really didn't happen. The auditioners this time around ranged from funny to "meh", with some of the "meh" ones making it through to the semifinals.

Here are a few of the comedic highlights:

  • Myq Kaplan: Anyone who decides to spell "Mike" like this is worth a look, and this guy was clearly the most complete comedian of the night. A self-proclaimed "nerd", the guy joked about everything from vegetables to relationships, and he was also quick on his feet with the judges.
  • Mike Vecchione: While this guy spels his name as a normal person should, he still managed to bring out the laughs with a hilarious bit about cops.
  • Nikki Glaser: Sometimes, "Last Comic Standing" relies to much of the archetype for a female comedian. While Glaser doesn't necessarily push the envelope with her material, she had the best deliver perhaps of anyone on the entire episode.
  • Kyle Grooms: One of the other red flags in a show like this is if someone tries to use race too much in their jokes that they become a one-trick pony. While Jerry Rocha fell victim to that (even though he's still going through), Grooms mixed it up just enough to stay funny.
  • Bryan McKim: Both Brian and his wife have been comedians for quite some time, but he was the only one to make it to the semifinals. The guy clearly has some solid material, but he's almost so dry that you feel like you are listening to sandpaper.

The only real highlight from this episode who didn't make it was Jordan Rock, who we probably wouldn't know anything about if it wasn't for the fact that he is Chris Rock's 19-year old brother. He was in the end deemed "not ready" for this competition.

Thankfully, next week we will already get the chance to see the comedians face off in order to make it to the next round. Are you glad auditions are already over? Feel free to share your thoughts with a comment below!
