President Obama said recently he wanted congress to pass health care reform before he leaves for his overseas trip at the end of this week. With the bill in the in the final stretch, house democrats are pushing their caucus for a vote this week, but as of today it appears they are a couple votes short of the 216 required to pass the bill. The most optimistic tally gives the democrats 211 votes with some opposition from liberal and conservative democrats. Without any republican support it might come down to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's ability to whip her members into shape, which she has been able to do successfully in the past. When push comes to shove Pelosi should find the votes, but the route there will surely be a DC drama. This week will be a defining moment for the democrats and may be telling of their chances in the midterm elections.
