Last Chance for Bike-Pedestrian Safety Bill Still to Pass NYS Assembly

Last Day for the State Assembly to Approve Legislation that Improves Driver Education on Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

Today is the last day of the state legislative session, and we need you to speak up for a simple measure that will help improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and reduce preventable crashes like this one that kill bicyclists every year in our state.

This is the last chance to show support for a bill that would require the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to incorporate a bicycle and pedestrian safety component into the pre-licensing driver's education curriculum and the exam that new drivers must complete.

On June 18 the state Senate approved the bill - S6143a (Golden) - by a 58-1 vote.

However the Assembly version of the bill - A4194a (Mosley) - has stalled in the Transportation Committee, which means the full Assembly cannot vote on the legislation.

It must be approved by both houses of the Legislature and signed into law by the governor before becoming law.

What You Can Do

Contact Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver TODAY by phone and ask to have the bill brought to the floor for an up or down vote. The Speaker has this authority, and we believe that Assembly members from both sides of the aisle will see value in this legislation.

What You Can Say

I. Urge the Speaker to move A4194a (Mosley) to the Assembly floor for a vote TODAY (don't forget to mention the bill number and sponsor)

II. New drivers in New York State absolutely must be educated about their legal responsibilities and safe behavior when interacting with cyclists and pedestrians on the road

III. Bicyclists and pedestrians comprise 28% of all traffic fatalities in New York - making our state the worst in the nation.

IV. This is a straightforward, common sense piece of legislation that can help reduce preventable bicycle crashes, injuries and fatalities by improving the quality of bicycle safety information provided to new drivers.
