Visitors to Las Vegas can expect many sights while walking along the Strip. Moving billboards advertising girls to your room, the bright neon lights, high-definition LED signs and marquees, people allowed to walk in public with a drink in their hand, and if you are just a people watcher you can spend the better part of your vacation doing just that.
When guests come in to town, the most common statement is ‘why are there so many smut peddlers and characters in full dress on the Strip, and that they were either pushy or rude’. “They are taking the fun out of walking the Strip to enjoy the sights and sounds of Las Vegas”.
This has been an ever-growing issue over the past year. This came to a head after a string of murders on the Strip. commissioner Steve Sisolak has become very involved with Strip safety and perhaps the regulation of these peddlers and characters. A very difficult task. A panel was formed last year and was shot down by the court over First Amendment rights. Something does need to be done. We want our city to be viewed as a safe and fun destination and without the trash of smut peddlers strewn over the sidewalk.
I do not have an answer. This is for the city to decide. I do believe there needs to be some sort of regulation in place. Metro has increased visibility and the casinos are now getting involved. Gaming, liquor, taxes, your job, Home Owners Associations and a vast majority of your life is regulated. Why not this?
Fox5Vegas aired a piece on this very issue. Watch the report and make up your own mind. Strip Characters: Behind The Mask.
