On Monday Dec. 23 a Las Vegas cab driver by the name of Gerardo Gamboa picked up a customer at The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino and drove him to The Palms Place, a Casino Resort and received a $5 tip from his passenger. He then went to pick up another customer at The Bellagio when a doorman handed Gamboa, a brown paper bag from the back seat that his previous fair must have left, to make room for his passenger. Initially Gamboa thought the bag had chocolates in it but when he decided to see what was in the bag, he was stunned to find six stacks of one hundred dollar bills totaling $300,000. Instead of keeping the money for his self, Mr. Gamboa’s dignity took over and he went and turned it in, to Yellow Checker Star Transportation which is the company Gamboa works for. When he turned it into his boss he stated that he did not want someone else’s money.
It turns out that Mr. Gamboa’s fair that night that left the money in his cab is a very well known professional poker player. The famous poker player showed up at Yellow Checker Cab Company not long after the incident claiming he had left 300,000 dollars in the back seat of the cab he rode in the morning of the incident. The cab company’s chief operations officer, William Shranko then called on the Las Vegas metro police to help investigate that the money did indeed belong to the famous poker player who would like to remain anonymous. After a call to the Cosmopolitan Casino, who verified the amount paid out and the time of the payout, which was all that was needed to confirm the anonymous poker player’s claim.
As for the generous Mr. Gamboa, he received as $10,000 cash reward from the thankful poker player on Friday December 27th for doing the right thing and making sure the money was returned to its rightful owner. But the grateful poker player was not the only one pleased with Mr. Gamboa’s actions. It turns out he was also rewarded from his company, Yellow Checker Star Transportation awarded Mr. Gamboa with a $1000 check and a $250 certificate to cover dinner for two at Lawry’s restaurant. Gamboa said to the media earlier this week before receiving the $10,000 cash reward that sin city is really angel city.
