Looking for a special Father’s Day gift?
Saturday, June 11, 2011, just in time for Father’s Day Sunday, June 19th, kids can go to any of the locations of Star Nursery and make a garden stepping stone for Dad. Materials are provided for free for ages 3 years to 11 years when accompanied by a parents or guardian.
Registration is required so check out this website Kids Club for more information or go by your neighborhood Star Nursery to sign up. There are other Kids Club activities being planned at Star Nursery through June into August so check them out too. Fun gardening activities for kids in the Vegas Valley provided by Star Nursery are a nice service to the community.
With school out for the summer most kids will complain of being bored and wanting to get out of the house once in awhile to do something. Getting involved with nature and gardening will be a good break from TV and computer games. Since the above garden nursery avtivites are on weekends, kids that may still be in school or preschool will still be able to attend.
Gardening can be quite interesting and fun for kids even in a small yard or space. Many insects can be found in plants in the morning and evening that will capture the interest of most kids. Those who are a little squeamish about insects can enjoy and learn about flowers and edible plants even if it is only to plant the seeds from an apple or other fruit that they eat.
The Learning Channel – TLC has a website for kids with gardening activities that are inexpensive and easy to do. When the days are too hot to go outside there are small gardening projects that can be done indoors too.
Gilcrease Orchards is another fun place to visit where the family can pick their own vegetables and fruits and see how food crops are grown and harvested. The Gilcrease Orchard farms are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7am to Noon.
Go outside enjoy the gardens and backyards and let the watermelon seeds fly.
