Are you ready for the newest show to hit the Las Vegas Strip? Neil Sedaka said it best when he said, “I love, I love, I love my calendar girl” in his 1961 hit “Calendar Girl.” The Stratosphere Hotel and Casino has a girl for all seasons in their newest show PIN UP.
The Stratosphere teamed up with their current headliner, critically acclaimed performer Frankie Moreno to come up with this cutesy retro burlesque show starring Playboy’s 2011 Playmate of the Year and Bettie Page Clothing model Claire Sinclair.
What would a PIN UP show be without beautiful women? Claire Sinclair is surrounded by beautiful bombshells that are incredibly talented dancers as well. The ladies of PIN UP take you through the year of vignettes one fabulous month after another.
Lacey Schwimmer of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars fame actually choreographed some of the dance sequences, which feature a wide variety of dance styles.
I would be remiss not to mention the male lead of the show. Normally the male lead is background fodder, a necessity for certain dance routines. Though not in PIN UP, Ryan Kelsey characters pop out because of his high-energy dance routines that in some cases make it seem like he never touches the ground.
A feisty Autumn Belanger-Madill kicks off the show singing Tangerine Honey by Frankie Moreno. Backing up Autumn, is a six-piece band which includes some of Las Vegas’ most talented musicians lead by trumpeter and composer Dave Perrico.
What appeared to be a song and dance show quickly became more interesting as they wheeled in a video screen for a skit. Claire Sinclair was on the video screen doing a traditional strip tease. Ryan who was still on stage from the last number, interacted with the video screen appearing to be helping Claire strip. The screen was turned around to show the audience that Claire was not actually there. The grand reveal happened as the video screen dropped and the scantily dressed Claire Sinclair was standing there.
Each month had a different themed vignette. One vignette that comes to mind was the one that had the stage looking like an aircraft manufacturing plant. The ladies dressed up like Rosie the riveter. (The “We Can Do It!” Poster Girl.) The fast paced music mixed with the comical burlesque left a smile on my face.
Another fun vignette featured Sarah Short dressed as a baseball player. (If I may add that if baseball had a women’s league dressed like this I would watch more baseball.) Sarah showed off her tap dancing skills against drumming talent of Brian Czach. Despite Brian’s talent with drumsticks he stood no chance against the blonde bombshell!
The magically skits were by far my favorites. One consisted of Claire getting stalked by her pillow in bed. (That is all I am going to tell you, but the skit was fantastic!) The other magically skit that stood out was when Claire Sinclair appeared on stage dressed like a sexy witch. A cauldron stood on stage surrounded by candles. The seductive Claire Sinclair did a provocative strip tease while adding this and that to her witches brew to come up with the ultimate love potion.
The show ended with a standing ovation to the cast. I attended the soft opening and to be expected there were a few snags, such as lags between sets, but the show itself seemed pretty solid. The show has incredible potential and with a little fine-tuning I believe this show could be one of the best shows in Las Vegas.
PIN UP has an incredible cast, which includes a fantastic singer, an incredible band, a plethora of astonishing dancers, and the alluring and tempting PIN UP model herself, Claire Sinclair. How could you go wrong with that formula?
