The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department just released the latest area crime stats, which show a significant decrease in several categories ( including violent crimes ) during 2011. Some categories have declined by more than 20%.
Between 2010 and 2011, homicides decreased by 25%, robberies dropped 20%, traffic fatalities dropped 15%, and auto theft declined by 5%. These crime rate reductions occurred despite cuts in law enforcement budgets.
The only increased incidence of violent crimes was the number of sexual assaults, an area Sheriff Doug Gillespie noted as a top recent priority within the department.
Local law enforcement staged a news conference yesterday to celebrate their success. Officials claim contributions to a safer community include education, awareness, and partnerships with community groups such as Crimestoppers. Capt Mark Tavarez said " our mission as the agency is to be the safest community in America. That not only includes crime, but traffic as well.
The Metro Police Department employs fewer than 3000 police officers on regular duty, which translates to just over 2 officers per one thousand Vegas residents.
Cheers...
