On Friday, October 10, from 5:30 until 7:00 many published Las Vegas writers will hold a huge book signing event at an iconic spot—Atomic Liquors, 917 Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.
This is a great chance to meet and mingle with authors in a casual atmosphere and perhaps discover a new favorite. There are many excellent authors in the Las Vegas area with books ranging from sci-fi and fantasy to romance and mystery, non-fiction and more.
Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas, originally founded by Joe & Stella Sobchik in 1952. In fact, they had the first package liquor license and off-sales permit.
Originally built in 1945 as Virginia’s Café, it was renamed for a time when customers watched atomic blasts from the roof. According to stories floating around, Joe was tired of cooking food, and it actually seemed the customers were more interested in sampling his secret ingredient 'Atomic Cocktails' while they watched the nuclear blasts from the nearby Atomic Test Site.
So the couple renamed the business Atomic Liquors in 1952, and thus began the popularity of the massive, wrap around bar. The neon sign is a one of a kind landmark and still shines today. Atomic has showbiz in its veins like much of old-time Vegas. Picture The Rat Pack and the Smothers Brothers drinking those Atomic Cocktails after their nightly shows.Barbra Streisand even had her own seat, which has now been restored and on display.
In 2012 a group of investors led by longtime Downtown Las Vegas Attorney Lance Johns purchased the Atomic from the Sobchik's son, Ron, and remodeled it to its original glory. At the Atomic you’ll find history, atmosphere, free parking, and drink specials, and on Friday, October 10 you’ll also find an outstanding group of authors, all happy to tell you about their books and answer questions. Who knows how many autographed books you will walk out with.
