Earlier tonight Ryan Couture won his second professional match in Strikeforce and was victorious by submitting Lee Higgins in the third round at Strikeforce Challengers 14.
Couture showed considerable improvement in his stand-up game since his last match at Strikeforce Challengers 10, where he beat Lucas Stark.
In the first round, both fighters felt one another out until the last minute of the round when Couture almost landed a left body kick that Higgins caught. Couture then landed a right that dropped Higgins to the mat. Couture then attempted a guillotine and a D’Arce choke, but Higgins survived the round by it ending before he could tap.
Couture started the second round again on the feet, but didn’t cause much damage until he landed a right that rocked Higgins. Couture then took Higgins to the mat, where he controlled the rest of the round.
In the third round, it was much of the same. Couture secured a single-leg takedown and controlled the fight on the ground. At 4:41 in the final round, Couture submitted Higgins via rear naked choke.
Couture showed improvement in his stand-up, but was still critical of his performance. After the fight Couture said, “I had a hard time finding him with my hands. But when the right hand did connect, it worked.”
This was the Couture’s second professional fight and with his continuing improvement, Couture will definitely see more action in Strikeforce. If he keeps making such a positive impression in the fight industry, perhaps he won’t have to live long in his famous father’s shadow.
