The version of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 that American audiences will see is apparently very different than the extremely graphic director's cut that recently played in Berlin. The edited version debuted on our shores just a few weeks ago at Sundance, and it was there that I saw it found it to be provocative, but also the director's most accessible film yet. And now those who are inclined to go on this sexual odyssey with von Trier (burn that into your mind's eye!) have a new trailer to feast on.
Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, and Shia LaBeouf, the first volume has the titular figure recounting her sordid sexual history to the fly-fishing academic who discovered her unconscious in an alley. While the footage plays up the salacious elements, the finished film is one of von Trier's smartest and funniest, offering up a look at a strong woman who refuses to be categorized as a victim. Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 hits VOD on March 6th, then theaters on March 21st.
