Larry Wilmore, Author & Daily Show Senior Black Correspondent
A perk of being the Comedy Examiner is that I get advanced copies of funny books by funny people to read. I just got one from Monty Python and another about a man who cleans up crime scenes.
Last summer I got an advanced copy of Larry Wilmore's "I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts". There are tons of Chicago people who have been on the Daily Show, from Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert to Allison Silverman to Dan Bakkhedahl, not to mention David Pompeii, Jerry Minor, Matt Walsh, and Miriam Tolen... so I was super excited to read another cast member's book.
I would say this book were hilarious if it were not so damn brilliant. It could be comedy but in fact it is so smart that it is very biting social satire. Its too smart to just be a bit.
Wilmore takes on Obama, Katrina, and even Black Jesus.
On Black History month, he muses: "The purpose is making up for centuries of oppression with 28 days for trivia. I'd rather we got casinos."
Get smart, get perspective. Read Wilmore's book.
