Larry Wilmore named as successor to Stephen Colbert

On Friday basic cable network Comedy Central announced its choice to replace CBS bound Stephen Colbert. Instead of bring in an outsider, Comedy Central and “The Colbert Report” creator Jon Stewart decided to draft from within. Larry Wilmore will succeed Stephen Colbert in the same time slot on the new nightly show to be called “The Minority Report” in which Wilmore will also serve as executive producer with Stewart.

Wilmore has been a correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” since 2006 as its senior black correspondent. Prior to working on “The Daily Show,” Wilmore has been featured on several TV shows and was the creator and writer for “The Bernie Mac Show” and wrote for the early Fox series “In Living Color”.

In a statement released on Friday, Comedy Central described “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore” as providing “viewers with a distinct point of view and comedic take on the day’s news from a perspective largely missing in the current late night landscape.”

Jon Stewart the show’s creator and executive producer said,

While Larry Wilmore is a brilliant comic and showrunner, this is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan.

“The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore” is scheduled to premiere in January 2015 in the 11:30 pm time slot presently occupied by “The Colbert Report”.
