Larry Hagman, the actor who played iconic villain J.R. Ewing on Dallas, died Friday at the age of 81.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Hagman died at a Dallas hospital from complications from his battle with throat cancer. The actor battled liver cancer and cirrohosis of the liver in the 1990s after decades of alcohol abuse.
Hagman found stardom in his role in 1965 on I Dream of Jeannie where he played Major Anthony Nelson.
The actor had just reclaimed his role as the villainous J.R. Ewing last year on Dallas after TNT brought the night-time soap opera back to life.
Hagman originally made his debut as the much hated evil brother of Bobby Ewing in 1978, which made him a superstar. It was one of the network's top-rate programs and built an international following which is why it was revived in 2012.
Although Dallas has been renewed for another season which is set to begin in January, it is questionable whether it will survived without the despised J.R. Ewing.
