On February 9th, the FrostFang Tundra, a LARP group, visited the very accommodating Roll2Play RP game store in Coppell Texas.
The even went very well. With live fighting outside, a few curious onlookers came by to ask some questions that we were more than happy to answer. Tiffany Franzoni, the owner, had us a table set up where we displayed our weapons for everyone as well. Roll2Play is an amazing place; one that everyone in the Tundra will be visiting on a frequent basis. Tiffany is determined to break down the walls of the negative stereotypes that plague the role playing community. We are all people, and just as “normal” as the next person. What is “normal”? Is it “cool” to play Grand Theft Auto, but not an RP game? What is the difference? Why is one socially accepted and the other snubbed? I played ice hockey for over 12 years, and that was my addiction, but now live action role play is my addiction. I work a business professional job, have a fiancé and kids, but am a role player… Am I ‘weird’? No. I am not. Most role players are working, ‘main stream’, successful, people that role play as a stress reliever. Tiffany is working hard to make this known, and give those people who may be curious about role playing games a place to go check it out without pressure.
One of the ways that she is doing this is by holding classes hosted by people knowledgeable about that particular game (she has several listed up already), and have the newer players come in and have the host teach them how to play the game in a very non-threatening environment. One thing that keeps a lot of people from getting into gaming is the fear that they will not be any good at the game, and therefore will be slaughtered if they ever went to try. It is the “I don’t know how to play, and am not going to play if I’m just going to lose.” This gives people a way to learn the game, from experienced players, so that they can go out and play the game with other players.
Another way that Roll2Play is changing gaming is in that she has games in the back, most of the ones that are on the shelf that you can take down and play there. I witnessed a person ‘testing’ out the Game of Thrones board game to see how it plays before he purchased. Matt, another Roll2Play employee, sat with him and went through how to play the game. This was astonishing to me. These people at Roll2Play really care about the world of gaming, not just making a quick buck off of someone. It is great business, as I would, and will, go back to a place that is that warm and welcoming. They have my business.
I truly cannot say enough nice things about Roll2Play and the owner Tiffany. We look forward to establishing more events with Roll2Play, and look forward to meeting a grand number of new people, and spreading the word about both Roll2Play and FrostFang Tundra.
