Perfect tennis weather greated the players as the main draw began at the 2013 ButlerCars.com Tennis Classic of Macon. This 25K USTA Women's Pro Circuit event is being held at the luxurious Stratford Academy in Macon, Georgia.
Following the remaining qualifying matches, the first main draw match to take to the courts featured tournament No. 2 seed Michelle Larcher De Brito of Portugal and the number one player from Norway in Ulrikke Eikeri.
Larcher De Brito may be best known as the player that knocked Maria Sharapova out of Wimbledon this summer, and Eikeri is a promising 20-year old from Oslo that had success playing USTA Pro Circuit events in the United States in 2012, but she had been sidelined with injuries for the majority of 2013.
“It was hard being out injured, offered up Norwegian player. “But I feel better now and confident and feel I’m playing better.”
She felt well enough to take down the number two seed 6-4, 6-1 and there was no doubt that Eikeri was the better player today.
"Yea, this is a big win for me, maybe my biggest, yet," explained Eikeri.
Eikeri said she’s been concentrating on her serve, and with a lower ball toss, she said she can generate a little more pace.
Eikeri's main coach is her brother, and he is here in Macon helping his younger sister.
"He goes over the game plan with me, and helps me get ready," stated Eikeri.
We'll see if this sister and brother combo can keep working some Norwegian magic on the hard courts of Stratford Academy in Macon.
Eikeri will be back in singles action on Thursday.
