It has been almost two years since Lara Logan was last in Egypt. Two years since The “60 Minutes” correspondent went through a terrifying ordeal that many of us can not comprehend. Logan was in Egypt's Tahrir Square during the counties political uprising when she was separated from her crew and bodyguard. She was surrounded by an estimated 200-300 men, many of whom assaulted and raped her. Though she hasn't been back to Egypt, she says she has not stopped going to war zones and reporting on Middle East stories (Hollywood Reporter, Jan. 12).
During the assault, Logan says “I was dying in that square,” In an interview following the attack she said "I thought not only am I going to die, but it's going to be just a torturous death that's going to go on forever.” She also shared that "For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands." Her ordeal lasted about a half- hour before she was rescued by a group of Egyptian women and soldiers.
“I never thought I’d see my children again. When I finally got home, just to see my children, it was almost surreal."
She has since began a journal for her children so they can understand why she chose the profession that she did. The married mother of two was in Afghanistan as little as two months ago. She says that if the circumstances were different she would love to be living in Afghanistan, however her family is her priority. However, she has not given up on doing the work she loves: “We believe in those stories,” she said. “I’ll never stop covering them."
