Landrieu announces new crime initiative plan for New Orleans

New Orleans mayor, Mitch Landrieu, announced that a new crime initiative would be formed in New Orleans to take a closer look at homicides in the area.  The new task force will be composed of law enforcement officials and leaders of the community.

Concerned about the high murder rate in the city, which isn't going down, Landrieu decided it was time to do something about it.  The new initiative will be called the "Mayors Strategic Plan to Reduce Murders."  The new plan is modeled after a program that launched in Milwaukee, WI to reduce the number of killings there.

The murder rate in New Orleans has risen for the past five years and is above the national average with no signs of change for the future, other than rising even more.

The new Mayors Stragetic Plan to Reduce Murders will be composed of several teams directed at different areas.  For instance there will be an action team made up of law enforcement officials that will jump into action immediately after a murder.  Another team will take care of data and policies of the murders.

There will also be a team for community outreach and service.  A special team will be formed to seek out job opportunities for residents and others with criminal records.

The new plan goes into force immediately and will be targeted to the highest crime rate areas, which includes the 5th District, which covers the 9th Ward and Bywater; the 6th District, which includes Central City, the Garden District and Irish Channel; and the 7th District, in eastern New Orleans according to NOLA.com.
