Dear Supervisor Carges,
The Landmark Society of Western New York is writing in support of the proposed revitalization of the historic Erie Canal warehouse at 60 Clinton Street in the village of Brockport. Unique in Monroe County, this remarkable, c. 1850 building is a rare, surviving example in western New York of canal architecture from the mid 19th century. Because of its historic and architectural importance, it has been listed individually in the State and National Registers of Historic Places, our nation’s official list of properties recognized as significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
With the completion of the Master Plan for the Clinton Street Rehabilitation, the former warehouse was identified as a priority for renovation, due to its prominent location, size, and historic significance. The most important visual anchor on Clinton St., a rehabilitated warehouse will greatly assist with the transformation of this canal-side street into a thriving place for residents and visitors, alike.
We strongly encourage the Town of Sweden to approve the New York State Real Property Law 421-m tax abatements for the historic Erie Canal warehouse at 60 Clinton Street. An exceptional candidate for rehabilitation and re-use, the restored building will greatly enhance the community and result in long-term economic benefits for the residents of the greater Sweden-Brockport area.
