Investigators looking into a disability fraud case against BrookhavenTown animal control officer Richard Parrinello, found things a bit out of control when visiting his Shirley, NY home only to discover 850 snakes, turtles and tarantulas in his garage.
“I personally have never seen this many reptiles in one area,” commented Suffolk County SPCA chief Roy Gross.
While most of the animals were “legal,” a pair of 6’ Burmese pythons. It is also illegal for anyone to sell any of the animals from home without a permit.
Authorities also found the frozen carcasses of three small alligators, turtle shells, a dead bullfrog and a freezer full of dead mice used to feed the snakes.
Parrinello, 44, has been on disability leave from his full-time job due to carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrists and hands since May. Although he is cooperating with authorities, he could be fired depending on an upcoming hearing. In the meantime he received two tickets for the pythons and alligator parts and is due in District Court in Central Islip to face those charges on October 23rd.
