Land, sea, and air: Gift solutions for Dad this Father's Day

Father's Day is a week from today.
Father's Day is a week from today.

Father's Day is a week off. So what'll be this year? Another unwanted power tool that ends up rusting on a shelf in the garage? A new addition to Dad's Hideous Tie Collection? This year, let the old man know how special he is by considering one or more of these bounties of the land, sea, and air.

What could be more of the land than a spirit distilled under the most painstaking conditions from the earth's finest malted barley? And what better embodies the ultimate Scotch lover's dream than a bottle of Lagavulin single malt whisky, from Lagavulin's Distllers Edition. The single malt is aged in Pedro Ximenez casks, lending a touch of sweetness to what might be the smoothest, most complex malt whisky that will ever pass over Dad's lips. The price, $190, includes the cost of shipping.

For a taste of the grain that is edible, take

Dad to Capsouto Frères (451 Washington Street, at Watts Street, 212-966-4900) to sample Jacques Capsouto's Bourbon-maple soufflé ($10.50), the quintessential macho raised-pinky dessert, which is being unveiled this Father's Day. The restaurant was named by both the 2010 Michelin Guide and Zagat NY as having the city's best soufflés.

Moving gradually from land to sea, how about treating Dad to a share in this year's wild salmon harvest by Iliamna Fish Company, a fishing cooperative in Bristol Bay, Alaska? A single share translates to 12 pounds of hand-cut premium wild sockeye fillets, vacuum-sealed and flash frozen. The cost of a share is $198. You take delivery at The Brooklyn Kitchen (100 Frost Street, Brooklyn, 718-389-2982) which has an exclusive arrangement with the cooperative.

For a different take on the wonders of the briny deep, treat Dad to the $35 three-course lobster menu at Fishtail, by David Burke (135 E 62nd Street, 212-754-1300), which will feature such David Burke signatures as "angry" lobster, lobster carbonara, and lobster dumplings.

Give Dad a Father's Day gift that is not merely of the water but on it by taking him aboard one of the vessels of the Bateaux New York fleet, which operates out of Chelsea Piers (Pier 61, W 23rd Street, 866-817-3463). Two different cruises are available, one for brunch (which includes a complimentary glass of champagne or mimosa for adults), and one at dinner. The brunch cruise runs $57.90 per adult, half-price for children ages 3 to 12. Dinner is $115.90 per person.

If you're into cooking and Dad is into eating winged creatures, consider a multi-course bird feast, ingredients for which you can find at Citarella. Get their goose, or opt for quail, pheasant, guinea hen, squab, or duck. The whole larger birds run approximately $25 each. The prices for parts start at $4.99 a pound. Citarella has four locations. Its flagship store is at 2135 Broadway, at 75th St, 212-874-0383.

Or take to the skies literally with a tour of the city from the air via Liberty Helicopters. Tours operate out of the downtown Manhattan heliport at Pier 6 and The East River. All passengers are required to present a valid photo ID. The cost of a tour ranges from $150 to—if you're really flying—$995. For information call 1-800-542-9933.
