Mary Chiaramonte’s first solo exhibit show, “Land of Strangers,” is on view at Eric Schindler Gallery.
“When I was a young girl, my twin sister asked why we refer to those that are unfamiliar as ‘strangers.’ ‘What are they stranger than?’ All I could imagine was that they were stranger than she and I,” said the artist in a statement to the gallery. “This was my first recognition of the tighter bond of twinship.”
Chiaramonte’s paintings also comment on their opposite, the beauty of mystery.
“The faces of these works are shrouded in darkness, or entirely cropped out, their backs are turned to us, and they cover their eyes so that we might not know them.”
The exhibit runs through Saturday, March 10.
Eric Schindler Gallery is located at 2305 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/644-5005. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday, noon to 3p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
