Xterra is the world’s premier off-road triathlon race, combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) rough water swim, a 29.5-kilometer (18.3-miles) mountain bike and a 9.8-kilometer (6.1-miles) trail run best described as a tropical roller-coaster ride through pineapple fields and forests.

The XTERRA World Championship starts at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, USA.

The former cycling champion recently finished 5th overall at his first Xterra race in Ogden, Utah in late September.  Lance more than proved he's a world class endurance athlete ready to take on the world of triathlon, albeit off-road.

Shortly after Lance finished, he posted this message on his twitter account  @lancearmstrong, "Well that was HARD! Much respect to all the competitors today . And a big thanks to all the volunteers as well.

Nico Lebrun won the 2011 Xterra USA Champion finishing the race in 2:24:20.  Dan Hugo was second at 2:24:34, Josiah Middaugh in third at 2:25:34 and the 4-time Xterra World Champion, Conrad Stoltz placed 4th.  Rounding out the top five was  Lance Armstrong.
