It may not be Ironman Kansas 70.3, 20 miles west of Kansas City, but it's still a 70.3 race that Lance Armstrong will jump into this weekend.
Last year, Armstrong was participating in several XTERRA off-road triathlons. This year, Armstrong's accusations of doping during his pro cycling days were dropped and this weekend he has been confirmed on sources today that he will race Ironman Panama 70.3 this weekend.
Armstrong was dropping hints on twitter that he may be racing this weekend.
With his career in professional cycling over, a large majority of endurance sports enthusiasts wondered what Armstrong with due with himself athletically. He could only invest so much in the Livestrong campaign to satisfy his competitive nature. As he began tweeting about swimming and running, it was a natural conclusion that he would shift to triathlon.
For the past two years, it was rumored he may try to race the World Championships at Kona, but he has yet to show. What a find it would be for the sport if Lance could take the stage at Kona 2012. With Chris McCormack out for the Olympics and Chrissie Wellington taking the year off, the sport was looking at a lull for the championship. Thank you Lance Armstrong for a reason to tune in for 2012.
Will he dominate? Will he kill on the bike and fade on the run similar to a Chris Lieto?
Time will tell, and it should be fun to watch.
