Lancaster County learns to ‘cash in’ on ‘Amish Mafia’

The people of Lancaster County, PA, the setting for Discovery Channel’s hit new reality series “Amish Mafia”, may not take the reality show too seriously, but they have found ways to cash in on its popularity, reports the New York Post on Jan 3.

According to an interview with Jackie Kissel, an employee at Art & Glassworks, the owners and workers at their store found it “hysterical” that their shop was featured on the show, leading viewers to believe they were protected by the “Amish Mafia”.

Although the owners of the store deny that they are protected by the Amish mafia, they have responded by posting a sign saying they are protected by Lebanon Levi, the big boss on “Amish Mafia”. Kissel reports that they had a good holiday season and hopes the attention brought to the store by “Amish Mafia” will bring in more tourist this summer..

Other storeowners are handing out toy guns to jokingly offer protection from the gangs that “Amish Mafia” claims exist in the area.

Although some residents are amused by the portrayal of their community, others are concerned that and have called the series “organized crime against the Amish”. They say it provides a false image of the community and is disrespectful to their values.

The series “Amish Mafia” seems to be following the footsteps of “Breaking Amish”, garnering millions of viewers who tune in each week to learn more about the Amish.

Tune in to “Amish Mafia” on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on Discovery Channel to find out what makes this show so popular with viewers.
