Lancaster County Crafts

Lancaster County is alive with craft shows in the next few months. The heart of Amish country in Pennsylvania has always been associated with homemade crafts, furniture and beautiful quilts. It’s definitely a crafters delight any time of the year, but spring and her urge for new beginnings and fresh home décor entice travelers from all the PA area to Lancaster County.

The calendar on Pa Vendors is filled with upcoming events to satisfy your need for homemade crafts, and a chance to get out of the house and spend the day in the country. The small towns surrounding Lancaster are filled with local shops touting the local wares of crafters. One of the popular events this time of year is the Fire and Ice Festival in Lititz at the Historic Rudy Hall. Over 40 local crafters will have tables set up Feb 17 & 18 during the festival.

Lancaster County is filled with farmers markets, antique malls and unique shops that you can find listed on PA Vendors website. The times, hours and locations are all listed for your convenience.

Today’s craft idea is very simple and will make a great, personal gift for any occasion. I’ve been making these for years and have used them as Christmas gifts, bridal shower gifts and just thinking of you gifts. Find a piece of slate that has the holes for hanging it. If you pick it up at a local rehab store be sure and clean it well as it probably came off someone’s roof. After it’s been cleaned and dried very well coat the entire piece of slate with Modge-Podge glue, glossy or matte, to seal the slate. Buy an 8x10 piece of scrapbook paper with a design you love. Now either write or find a poem or saying that inspires you, imparts what you want to say to someone or just has some meaning for you. Type those words into you word program and print it on the scrapbook paper, be creative with your font and the color you chose for the words.

If you have scrapbook scissors that will edge the paper in a funky design, do so or just be creative with regular scissors and trim the edges down so they fit nicely, leaving an inch or so of slate on the sides. Using your Modge-Podge again coat the slate so your paper will stick, wipe out the air bubbles carefully as you push the paper into the natural grain of the slate. Coat the top a few times, allowing for dry time, and use a pretty ribbon or leather cord strong enough to hold the slate as your hanger.

Now you have a personalized gift to share or a new piece of home décor to hang on your wall.
