Wheatland Middle School is closed today. The closing has nothing to do with the anticipated storm today but rather a fire last night at the school. According to WGAL-TV, material outside a kiln had caught on fire last night. Wheatland is one of the schools within the School District of Lancaster.

Another three to five inches are expected again today. The County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 p.m. The School District of Lancaster is currently (6:45 a.m.) reporting a two-hour delay.

Lampeter-Strasburg graduate James Wolpert returned last night as one of the Top 5 on The Voice. He sang a U2 song. The show airs on NBC. Two people will be voted off tonight.

Music lovers can now get advance tickets for February’s Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival. The Festival will be held at several venues throughout the City. It is slated for 21-22 Festival.

Right-hander Cody Eppley will be leaving the Lancaster Barnstormers, having signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2014 season. He is the second member of the 2013 Barnstormers to sign with a Major League organization this off-season. Left-hander Nate Reed was signed by the Boston Red Sox in October. The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their tenth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster.

Six people are missing after playing in the snow. CNN reported a Nevada family went out to play in the snow and has not been heard from since. The six are believed to be in the Seven Troughs mountain range area.

Penn State is offering a webinar today focusing on the economic impact of Marcellus Shale activity. Fire Chief Charles A Pierson, 76 of the Southern Jackson County Volunteer Fire Department in WV, died Saturday. After responding to a motor vehicle accident, Chief Pierson suffered a medical emergency and collapsed while boarding the first due apparatus. Chief Pierson passed away in the fire station on 7 December. Tribute is being paid to Fire Chief Charles A. Pierson at http://www.usfa.fema.gov/fireservice/fatalities/. To date, 93 firefighter fatalities have been reported to USFA in 2013.

A transformer exploded in an electrical switchyard caused the declaration of an Unusual Event at the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Entergy Operations, Inc., is located in Russellville. The declaration also prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to activate its incident response center in Arlington, Texas. Unit 2 will remain offline as investigators determine what caused the incident. No radiation was released.

Around the World:

Two French soldiers were killed in the Central African Republic overnight. They are, according to BBC, the first French deaths reported since France sent soldiers to the CAR.

Fracking has led to protests in Canada. Aljazeera America reports that the protests are growing and spreading. The shale gas testing company involved is based out of Texas.

The Memorial Service for former South African leader Nelson Mandela will be today. AllAfrica.com focuses on Mandela today in their reports. Mandela will be buried in Qunu in the Eastern Cape with his children.

The European Commission has told the Irish Government it should make a €2.5 billion adjustment in next year’s budget, according to The Irish Times.

Authors world-wide, more than 500 including five Nobel laureates, are making a statement against the US and other countries accused of spying. They have signed a petition called ‘A Stand for Democracy in the Digital Age’ demanding an end to ‘mass surveillance’, according to RT.
