Lancaster City Morning Buzz: Monday, 20 January

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is this day each year we, as a nation, recall one of our Nation’s most profound and well known civil rights activists. In recalling Dr. King, President Barak Obama, in his proclamation, reminds Americans that we are all on a journey and it is not complete.

Start your day at the 26th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Breakfast Monday. The breakfast will be held at F&M’s Alumni Sports & Fitness Center, 929 Harrisburg Avenue, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The event is hosted by the Crispus Attucks Community Center. Tickets are $65.

The YWCA is holding a birthday bash for Dr. King today. Preschool activities will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. School age activities will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. The YWCA is located at 110 North Lime Street.

The United Way is looking for over 100 volunteers. United Way’s MLK Day of Service provides opportunities to respond to Dr. King’s call to service. There are 13 projects available throughout Lancaster County. To register for volunteer projects, please go to, click “Get Connected”, then click the tab that says “2014 MLK Day of Service.”

City offices will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There will be no street cleaning. There will however be regular trash and recycling collection.

In addition to the city offices, all county and federal government offices will be closed as well. Most banks will be closed. Readers should contact their specific bank and branch before heading out. There will be no mail delivery.

The School District of Lancaster is closed today and Tuesday. The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design will be closed.

The Red Rose Transit Authority (RRTA) will operate on its regular bus schedule.
