Lancaster area under Winter Weather Advisory

See also

Yes, the calendar does indicate that it is Spring and that April is a mere day and a half away, but the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lancaster area. The Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. tonight.

The Advisory is for snow and sleet. There is a slow moving band of locally heavy snow that is drifting over the area. We could see two to four inches of snow along with a quarter inch of ice!

The NWS advises that a slow moving band of snow will move through the area this evening. The snow should change to flurries and scattered snow showers at some point between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Winds are expected to be from the northeast at around 20 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph.

Travel may be hazardous at times. If you have to drive today while it’s raining, snowing or sleeting, please turn your lights on. If your wipers are on then your lights must be as well. Visibility could drop, the NWS advises, to around a quarter of a mile at the heaviest times.

Although temperatures are expected to remain above freezing, remember bridges and overpasses freeze before roadways.

The NWS is also asking that ice and snow accumulations be sent to them. Email your report to You can also tweet them @nwsstatecollege, using the hashtag #CTPWX.

While Lancaster appears to be receiving rain at the moment (6 p.m.), many places in York County and the Southern End of Lancaster have reported snow and ice.
