Lanai plane crash kills three passengers and injures three more. The small plane burst into flames after taking off from Lanai Airport, Hawaii. According to ABC 7 Chicago on Feb. 28, the plane was carrying five passengers in addition to the pilot.
The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday about a mile from Lanai Airport, Maui County spokesman Rod Antone said.
The Lanai plane crash killed the pilot and two Maui County Department of Planning employees. Two other employees and a deputy attorney for another agency were injured, but survived. All of the survivors were airlifted to a hospital in Honolulu.
The County Planning Commission chartered the Maui Air flight involved in the Lanai plane crash. The injured attorney called 911 and reported that he had pulled two other bodies from the burning wreckage. The three survivors all suffered burn injuries.
The Lanai plane crash was reminiscent of another that occurred on Dec. 11. A plane crash-landed in the ocean of the island of Molokai killing a state official. Inter-island travel is very common for Maui County employees, which includes the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Lanai is home to 3,200 residents. In 2012 Billionaire Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle Corp. bought all but 2 percent of the island.
