Lamar have handed UTSA an upset defeat as they defeated the Roadrunners 3-1 in the final match of the UTSA Classic on Sunday at Park West.
Lamar got off to a perfect start as Kimmy Albeno continued her good run of form of late scoring her third goal of the season as she put away Taylor Mitchell's pass just six minutes in to the match.
The Cardinals could have made it two just three minutes later as Mitchell looked to go on her own but sent her shot wide of the post.
UTSA had two solid early chances to hit back from Happy Orere-Amadu but both of her efforts were hit over the bar as UTSA started to work back in to the match.
UTSA really took control after the 20th minute but too often their runs were poorly timed as the offside flag denied the Roadrunners consistently.
The Roadrunners had chances late on in the half to restore parity with four chances falling their way but again they couldn't keep their shots down as Lamar went to the break 1-0 up.
UTSA started the second half brightly and in the 48th minute were back on level terms as Taylor Wingerden tapped home her own rebound after Bailey Fontenot made the save.
That lead to a period of dominance for UTSA with Kauwela Neal looking dangerous but unfortunately for the Roadrunners their finishing continued to be wayward as the shots were sent over the bar.
Lamar came back and countered well and just before the hour mark they had their second coal with Mitchell turning provider again as she set up Jennifer Yacuta to restore the Cardinals' lead.
As is typical with matches early in the season both teams went to their benches regularly throughout the second half slowing down the match and making it hard for either team to really build some ascendency.
There was one moment of magic left as Jannet Hernandez found Stefanie Miroballi in space, 30 yards out allowing Miroballi to launch a powerful strike that came down off the crossbar and in to seal a 3-1 win for Lamar.
