The Cultural Center in Milot is one of the many wonderful developments taking place in Haiti’s tourist sector. The Lakou Lakay Cultural Center is located 17 miles from Cap-Haitien in the north of Haiti and at the foot of mountain that is home to the amazing Citadel fortress. The Cultural Center is in its infancy but under the direction of Maurie Etienne and his wife it is be developed into place where tourists can learn about the culture and ecology of Haiti. Already guests can stay at the Lakou Lakay and feel, as the name indicates, as one of the family.
The tree-filled grounds are being developed into a botanical garden where guests can learn about the ecology of the area with tree identified and their use explained. Today Lakou Lakay is a favorite place to dine, by reservation only, with all the food organically produced and presented in a professional manner by Etienne’s wife, Innocencia. A meal include coffee Innocencia made from the coffee beans she collected from their trees and gound them for the freshest Arabica coffee. It doesn’t get much better than that. Dining at Lakou Lakay is an unforgettable experience.
Etienne also serves as a guide to the area and organized trips to the Citadel, Haiti’s amazing ford located high on the mountain about Milot.
