The Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre makes it appearance this month at Albuquerque's Popejoy Hall. The three-part program call Cokata Upo! Come to the Center (Story of the Birth, Death and Rebirth of a Nation) is a celebration of the native culture weaving a narrative of the sacred and traditional stories of the tribe.
Founded on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota in 1978, Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre, the group sought to keep the legends and traditions of the tribe alive. Since its inception, the touring company has performed at Kennedy Center and was featured in the 2000 Millenium Celebration in Times Square as well as part of the Cultural Olympiad during the Games in Greece.
The Washington Post describes Cokata Upo! as "A dazzling performance... Conveyed a profound sense of ritual" and Dance Magazine calls it "Spectacular!" and "Emotional!"
