The Los Angeles Lakers trade rumors have been buzzing for two years know when star forward Pau Gasol is concerned. According to ESPN on Feb. 2, the rumors are starting up again as the Phoenix Suns are looking at possibly trying to put together a trade for Gasol.
The Lakers are in the midst of one of the worst seasons in many years, sitting 15 games under .500 with a 16-31 record. That puts them 10.5 games back from an actual playoff spot this season. That should make the idea that rebuilding might be necessary for the Lakers to improve in the future.
Pau Gasol leads the team in points per game (17), rebounds per game (10.2) and blocks per game (1.5). Trading away the best performer on a team might make the natives restless, but Los Angeles has to do something to heal the bleeding and cutting their 33 year old star might be a necessity.
Kobe Bryant has only played six games this season and his days in the NBA might be numbered and Steve Nash doesn’t have much left in his gas tank either.
With the Phoenix Suns making a playoff push, bringing in a veteran leader like Pau Gasol makes sense. Phoenix could send the contract of Emeka Okafot to the Lakers, and Los Angeles could waive him immediately and cut their luxury tax obligations down.
However, Los Angeles wants someone in return and not just financial relief, so Phoenix would have to sweeten the pot somehow and the Suns have four first round picks in the 2014 NBA Draft they could throw in.
