The NBA trade deadline is a little more than a month away on Feb. 20 and the rumor mill is buzzing in Los Angeles with Kevin Love coming up as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers. Apparently, it's an unspoken secret that Love covets the Lakers and hopes to be playing in purple and gold in the near future according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com on Jan. 9:
“They should trade him,” one Eastern Conference executive said. “No one thinks he’s staying. Everyone knows he wants to go to the Lakers.”
With the recent trade rumors involving Pau Gasol, the Lakers are actively pursuing their options with the four-time All-Star as the trade deadline draws near. Gasol was almost dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers recently in a swap for former Laker Andrew Bynum, but the Cavs decided to go with a deal from the Chicago Bulls for Luol Deng.
Although Gasol remains a Laker at this point in time, that may change if Love is available on the open market and wants to come to Los Angeles. Love played for UCLA in college and apparently has a soft spot for the city of Los Angeles leading many to believe he'll eventually end up with the Lakers.
It remains to be seen if the Minnesota Timberwolves will explore trading Love before the deadline, but the Lakers could be a trade partner if Minnesota is willing to talk about a potential deal for Gasol. Although the Lakers don't exactly have the kind of trade assets to land Love, the Timberwolves have been linked to Gasol in the past and may be looking into pairing the veteran forward with Spanish import Ricky Rubio.
