The NBA trade deadline is right around the corner with Pau Gasol being the most likely player to be sent elsewhere by the Los Angeles Lakers. Although Gasol's future is up in the air with the deadline looming, the two-time NBA champion wants to remain with the Lakers according to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times on Feb. 13:
Pau Gasol on trade deadline next Thursday: My preference would be to stay." Said he might be able to play again next Wednesday.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, Gasol isn't exactly a hot commodity on the trading block right now. As usual, the Lakers don't want to give up a big-name like Gasol without getting an asset of value in return.
At this point in time, the most likely trade scenario for the Lakers will be making a deal with the division rival Phoenix Suns before the deadline on Feb. 20. The Suns are the only team to show considerable interest in acquiring Gasol before the deadline outside of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Gasol was almost dealt to Cleveland in exchange for Andrew Bynum last month, but the deal never came to fruition with the Cavs ultimately going with an offer from the Chicago Bulls for Luol Deng. Talk of Deng being back on the trading block along with Anderson Varejao has begun to surface over the last few weeks, but it remains to be seen if Cleveland will reignite trade talks with the Lakers.
