Over the past few days the Lakers trade rumors have begun to kick into high gear with Pau Gasol potentially headed to the Phoenix Suns before the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 20. Although a deal may be imminent, the Suns want to wait and see how Gasol bouncing back from his groin injury according Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN on Feb. 4:
Sources told ESPN.com that, while there is substantive interest on both sides, it's believed Suns officials want to see how Gasol recovers from a strained groin before deciding whether to take talks to the next level.
With Gasol constantly mentioned in trade rumors over the past few years, the two-time NBA champion being involved in one more before the deadline comes as no surprise. Gasol's expiring deal will continue to draw trade interest around the league leading up to the deadline, but the Suns may have the edge with a deal that seems to intrigue the Lakers.
Although Gasol may ultimately land with the Suns once healthy, the Lakers appear to want more than what Phoenix is offering. The proposed deal with Phoenix is intriguing, but Mitch Kupchak and company are looking toward the 2014 NBA Draft and collecting draft picks in order help the rebuilding process promising young talent.
It'll be interesting to see how things pan out, but as of right now, all signs point to a deal getting done between these division rivals before Feb. 20.
