Over the past few years, Pau Gasol has been frequently mentioned in NBA trade rumors with the Los Angeles Lakers dangling the veteran power forward in an attempt to bring in younger talent. Even though the 2013-14 NBA regular season has yet to get underway, Gasol is already rumored to be on the trading block according to Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio on Oct. 14:
One Eastern Conference executive told FOX Sports Ohio he’s heard from the Lakers recently, and word around the league is they may try to make a "substantial" trade before the regular season. Apparently, forward Pau Gasol remains far from untouchable.
With the Lakers in the middle of a transition period after the failed attempt to make Dwight Howard the future face of the franchise, Gasol being involved in trade rumors once again comes as no surprise.
The international star is heading into the final year of his deal with the Lakers and that may make it easier for the team to deal him before the trade deadline. Gasol is still considered a star and a potential All-Star in this league, which bodes well for his trade value.
Although Gasol has made it clear that he wants to stay in Los Angeles for the rest of his career, the team may try and move him before his trade value dips too low. With Chris Kaman and Jordan Hill in the mix, Gasol may have become expendable once more with it potentially being only a matter of time before the Lakers find the right deal to bring in one or two younger players in exchange.
The Lakers are rumored to be looking for a capable scorer at the point guard position making Steve Nash expendable and potentially also on the trading block.
