The trade rumors are starting to swirl involving the Los Angeles Lakers. The storied NBA franchise may be looking to make a deal before the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 20 with the New York Knicks a potential suitor. Along with a possible deal to acquire Iman Shumpert, the Lakers might be kicking the tires on a trade to send Pau Gasol to New York in exchange for Tyson Chandler according to Chris Broussard of ESPN The Magazine on Dec. 14:
Sources say the Lakers are also interested in another Knicks player -- center Tyson Chandler. The Lakers did not inquire about Chandler when they called about Shumpert, but they are weighing whether to propose a Pau Gasol-for-Chandler trade, according to sources.
At this point in time, there's no telling what direction the Lakers will take before the deadline on Feb. 20 or during the off-season next summer. A considerable amount of cap space will open up for the Lakers following the 2013-14 NBA season and the team intends to bring in big-name talent to help build a title contender once again in the Kobe Bryant era.
Despite the Lakers' interest in Chandler, the move to acquire the former Defensive Player of the Year in exchange for Gasol may not be practical or wise. Chandler is owed $14.5 million next season while Gasol's contract comes off the books at the end of this season.
With the Lakers trying to clear as much cap space as possible in order to be big players in free agency, acquiring Chandler might not make that much sense. Chandler is a solid player and would be an upgrade defensively, but has his fair share of injury problems and will turn 32 right before next season (Oct. 2).
Although the Lakers are starting to reach out and appear to be open to making some moves before the trade deadline on Nov. 20, the Knicks may not be the team a deal is ultimately made with. More than two months are left before the trade deadline leaving potentially many more trade possibilities from now until then.
