Last week, the rumors have started to circulate about Kevin Love potentially nearing the end of his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Not only is Love seemingly tired of losing in Minnesota, but he's not so secretly hoping for a future with the Los Angeles Lakers. If Love declines the player option on his current deal, the veteran forward will become a free agent and may be narrowing options to the Lakers and New York Knicks according to Sam Smith of Bulls.com on Jan. 13:
"Love, in the top four this season in scoring and rebounding, is said to be favoring the Lakers or the Knicks in free agency in 2015 when both will have money for perhaps two free agents."
With the Lakers purposely clearing cap space for the upcoming free agent market this summer, the team may ultimately roll the dice on another big-name free agent like Carmelo Anthony. If Anthony is ready to leave New York, Los Angeles is a likely destination. The signing of Anthony may change things for Love a year later in free agency.
Although nothing is set in stone at this point in time, Love and Anthony are viable options for the Lakers. With the team looking to once again build a legitimate title contender, these two stars will likely be in the crosshairs of Mitch Kupchak and company.
It'll be interesting to see how things pan out moving forward. The Lakers may be concentrating on the 2014 NBA Draft this summer and then focusing on free agency in 2015 with Love being the team's top target.
