With the Los Angeles Lakers only having won 19 games so far this season, the storied franchise appears to be a major player in the 2014 NBA Draft. One player that the team is rumored to be targeting in the draft is Australia's Dante Exum. Apparently, the interest is mutual between Exum and the Lakers with the Australian phenom possible angling to force his way to Los Angeles according to Sean Deveney of Sporting News on Feb. 26:
But would Exum go so far as to try to angle his way onto the Lakers, who currently have the fifth-worst record in the NBA? That’s the concern among some front-office executives around the league.
At this point in time, the Lakers would be selecting a player in the top five of 2014 NBA Draft. Although Exum has only recently burst onto the basketball scene in the United States, the Australian has made a considerable impression and will likely be selected taken at some point early in the first round of the draft.
Many anticipate the upcoming draft to be one of the most talented in recent memory. Plenty of potential superstars may be making the jump to the NBA with Duke's Jabari Parker, Kentucky's Julius Randle, Kansas' Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid leading the way.
With that being said, Exum will have some tough competition from in order to be drafted by the Lakers if a player like Parker, Embiid or Wiggins is available.
Fortunately, Exum might have a few things going for him. Exum has already signed with Kobe Bryant's agent, Rob Pelinka, and plans to talk to the five-time NBA champion in the near future. The Lakers appear to think highly of the Australian prospect and may roll the dice on him if he's still on the board on June 26.
