"Ron Artest is synonymous with defense," says the animal rights org. "And now the NBA All-Star and Los Angeles Lakers forward is coming to the defense of homeless cats and dogs. Artest has teamed up with PETA for a brand-new billboard aimed at taking a bite out of the homeless-animal crisis."

In the ad, Ron is pictured on an outside basketball court in a dress shirt and jeans with his dog named "John Henry". The words: "It's a Slam Dunk: Have Your Dog Spayed or Neutered" read across the top. The billboard unveiling took place on Friday, February 23 in honor of National Spay Day.

"I got most of my animals from Humane Society," Artest says of his motivation to support PETA. "I think it's important to spay and neuter so you don't see dogs and cats roaming on the streets," he said, adding the public perception that it's expensive is just a misconception.
