The Los Angeles Lakers may have suffered a major blow on Thurs. Oct. 3 after potential starter Nick Young went down with a sprained ankle. Young tweaked his ankle during practice on Thursday according to Mike Trudell of Lakers.com via Twitter:

Nick Young (@NickSwagyPYoung) sprained his right ankle in practice today. The first preseason game is Sat. night, so we’ll see.

With Young going down in practice, the status of the 28-year-old for Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors remains uncertain. Young has been listed as day-to-day, but it’d be safe to say he’ll likely miss the two preseason games to be played back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday.

The second game of the back-to-back will have the Lakers will facing off against the Denver Nuggets.

At this point in time, Young will likely be the starting small forward playing alongside Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant and a power forward yet to be determined. Young may even start the season as the team’s starting shooting guard if Kobe is unable to get back in time for the season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers.

With a few more weeks left until the start of the season, head coach Mike D’Antoni will be tinkering with the roster in an effort to put the best group of five players out there. Young will almost certainly be one of those five unless this ankle injury ends up putting him on the bench for longer than anticipated.
