Lakeland Community College’s annual ‘Free College Day’ set for April 12th

Each year, Lakeland Community College hosts its annual “Free College Day” as a way of giving back to the community. This year’s event will take place on April 12, 2014 and will be held at the Kirtland Campus. The free event will feature over 30 one-hour, noncredit classes that are open to the public.

The theme for this year is “Food For Thought” and will feature classes in healthy living, nutrition, dieting, family gardening, genetically modified organisms, sustainability, and grocery savings with The Coupon Guy. There will also be classes focused on starting a small business, estate planning, Internet safety, Window 8 and the Affordable Care Act.

Along with the classes will be a number of other activities including a nature walk highlighting Lakeland’s agricultural past which will be led by Biology associate professor Dr. Stephen Vieira. The walk will begin at the Mooreland parking lot at 8:00 a.m. There will also be a free screening of the film “A Place at the Table” (2012, rated PG) that examines hunger issues in America. The film will be shown at 1:00 p.m. The Lake County Health Department will provide free blood pressure screenings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Along with these classes and special events, Lakeland will be serving a free, healthy lunch for all participants courtesy of Gordon Food Service and Coca-Cola. Participants will receive a free reusable lunch bag, while supplies last, sponsored by Cardinal Community Credit Union. Cardinal’s branch on the Lakeland campus, now open to the public, will provide a free sweet treat to those who stop in.

Those wishing to attend are encouraged to bring a food item for the “Feed Lake County Food Drive”. Collected items will be distributed to local food pantries and agencies as well as Lakeland’s Giving Hearts Food Pantry for students. All of those donating can enter a drawing for a chance to win a Kindle HDX Fire.

About Lakeland Free College Day

Lakeland President Dr. Morris W. Beverage Jr. began Lakeland's Free College Day in 2002 (then known as Lakeland Pride Day) as a way to thank the community for its support and to offer an open opportunity for all to see what’s available at the college. Lakeland's Free College Day classes are sample classes that do not count toward college credit but will provide participants with valuable information.

Lakeland is located on Route 306 just south of the I-90 interchange. For more information, call 440-525-7824.
