Lake Tahoe ski report: Snow storm will hit Tahoe ski resorts hard today (Photos)

Snowfall began late Tuesday night in the Lake Tahoe region and should continue to fall heavy throughout Wednesday in a storm that could bring as much as 2 feet of snow when it departs sometime Friday.

It’s a very welcome powder day at a handful of Lake Tahoe ski resorts, while Thursday and Friday could be epic days for any skier or snowboarder who navigates the tricky traveling.

While not all Tahoe resorts received significant amounts of snow on Tuesday, some did. Boreal Mountain Resort and Soda Springs, both located off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit, received 11 inches, while nearby Sugar Bowl reported 6-9 inches.

Squaw Valley, Kirkwood and Homewood ski resorts all had 6 inches of snow at their peaks, while Northstar and Alpine Meadows had 5.

According to the Weather Channel, there is a 70-percent chance of snow today through Friday. The weather should be clear this weekend with temperatures rising into the high 40s or low 50s by Sunday.

The much-needed storm is providing a good start to March after two months of very dry weather in the Lake Tahoe region and throughout Northern California.

It was a dismal January and February. Last week, the California’s cooperative snow survey measured 29 inches of snow with a water content of 13.4 inches. The good news: The poor numbers are twice as much as what was on the ground at this time last year.

This is the third driest January and February in the Sacramento region in 150 years, and the driest in California since 1920, when the record-keeping began.

Below is the National Weather Service forecast for today through Friday for the greater Lake Tahoe region.

Today: Snow in the morning...then snow showers in the afternoon. Snow accumulation 1 to 4 inches...with 3 to 6 inches above 7000 feet. Highs 32 to 37. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Ridge gusts up to 95 mph in the morning then decreasing to 75 mph.

Tonight: Numerous snow showers in the evening...then scattered snow showers after midnight. Snow accumulation up to 2 inches. Lows 12 to 17. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the evening becoming light. Ridge gusts up to 60 mph in the evening.

Thursday: Cloudy with a chance of snow showers. Highs 29 to 34. Light winds.

Thursday Night: Snow likely. Lows 13 to 18. Light winds.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of snow showers. Highs 30 to 35. Light winds becoming northeast around 10 mph in the afternoon.
