After another stretch of mostly dry weather, snow finally arrived Sunday night and continued into Monday in Lake Tahoe. It’s a timely dumping, creating the snow buzz that many Lake Tahoe ski resorts were hoping to hear heading into the three-day President’s Weekend.
The snow provided a powder day for skiing and snowboarding on Monday. Tahoe resorts reported receiving between 4-16 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours.
“We are extremely excited about the new snow and optimistic we will continue to get snow showers throughout the week, giving us great skiing and riding for the President’s Weekend,” said Steve Hemphill, spokesperson for Sierra-at-Tahoe.
According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are expected to stop Monday evening, but start up again on Tuesday evening and continue into Wednesday. More snow could also arrive Saturday through Monday.
“This is very important. You can recover from a lost Saturday, but you can’t recover from the loss of a holiday weekend,” said Shayder Edelman of Boreal.
A resort that annually gets among the highest snow totals in the Tahoe region, Kirkwood was reporting 12-16 inches over a 24-hour period.
Heavenly ski resort received 5 inches of new snow overnight. That meant turning off the snowmaking system, which has been running quite regularly since December.
“It’s nice of Mother Nature to show up and give our snowmakers the night off,” said Pete Sonntag, Heavenly’s general manager.
