Spencer Pike explains plans for Lake Gregory park and lake

Featured speakers included Spencer Pike, AGM/Operations Manager for Lake Gregory Recreation Company, part of The California Parks Company, a private firm which has taken over management of the county park at Lake Gregory. Pike discussed plans for upgrading the facilities, including San Mortiz Lodge, and adding a new floating playground. Dredging of the lake will proceed, with new silt ponds provided to help reduce the cloudiness of the water in the lake and the muck on the bottom.

Pike assured the public that all traditional uses of the park by community organizations such as Crest Forest Seniors meetings, senior lunches and the annual picnic will continue.

MAC board member Rick Dinon had nothing new to report on proposed repairs to the valves in the dam.

Glenn Barley from Cal Fire informed us of efforts to resume curbside chipping to reduced the potentially hazardous fuel in the case of a forest fire. Staffing at this time is at a transitional level, rather than a winter level, keeping extra personnel on duty because of the severe drought and dry condition of the forest.

Division Chief Kathleen Oplinger from the Mountain Division of San Bernardino County Fire Department announced a partnership with the Sheriff’s office in a helicopter airship program for observation, rescue and firefighting.

Public Information Officer Michelle Profant from Cal Trans discussed plans to build a center divider on Highway 18 from 40th Street in San Bernardino to the Crestline Bridge.

Aaron Creighton discussed the change in ownership of Rim of the World dot net, a web site providing local news and message boards. He also corrected some factual errors presented by the Cal Trans representative.

The February MAC meeting promises to be equally informative, and mountain residents are encouraged to attend.
